As many of you know, being a full time writer is a privilege granted to very few. I'm not one of them. So, to make hands meet, I have other projects such as this one.
A special and limited edition, exclusively on Kickstarter , that brings Portuguese eyewear brand SKOG Eyewear and Lata 65.
Hugo Janes, Co-Founder at SKOG eyewear tells us: “At the core of our brand is the belief that if businesses give back to society, we can truly have a better world. So when we came across Lata 65, we immediately wanted to contribute by doing something bigger than a donation. That’s when we decided to make this special edition, giving everyone the chance to own a piece of art!”
Lata 65 is an initiative for the elderly within the urban art that wants to prove that concepts such as active ageing and intergenerational solidarity make more sense every day. It is presented as a workshop taught in totally relaxed working environments, ideal for learning a variety of intervention techniques used in the streets and working directly with some of the best urban artists today. LATA 65 has already organized 34 workshops, with more than 400 participants from 65 to 102 years old, in Portugal, Spain, Brazil and US, and is always seeking for funding to reach even more people.
The actual participants of LATA 65’s workshops will paint the Graffiti Grandmas special edition!

A while ago I wrote about the exhibition artist Sebastian Errazuriz made for Arte Basel in Miami entitled "12 Shoes for 12 Lovers". It was a collaboration with shoe brand Melissa in which the artist portrayed his ex-girlfriends in the form of shoes. The exhibit had such success that a very limited edition of the shoes was made and sold exclusively at Melissa's gallery/store in São Paulo, London, and New York.
At the time I felt envy, I must confess. Envy for those who were able to buy the fabulous and exclusive shoes I could only dream of.
Until one of these days I was passing by a Melissa store in Lisbon and something very familiar caught my eye. I thought I was dreaming, but no. There they were: a more commercial version of 3 of the 12 shoes. A special edition that anyone can afford. Well, not everyone, because two of the models cost more than 400 euros. But the flat version of "Hot Bitch" is only 75.
So yes, I bought them. I had the perfect excuse, as I was looking for some red shoes for some while. And now, not only have I a new pair of red shoes but above all, I have a piece of Sebastian's art on my feet. And I'm in love with it!

She was already an awesome artist way before they met. And kept on being so after he passed.
She never needed to live in his shadow. She never need to shout for atention. Her work speaks for herself. In music, in music, in life.
It happens she's a girl. Or has Kat George puts in this brilliant article, "there’s a stigma attached to Love that comes not because of her messiness, but by virtue of that perceived lesser quality: womanhood."

Have I ever mentioned SKOG Eyewear in this blog? No? Shame on me!
Well, SKOG Eyewear is a Portuguese brand of wooden and bamboo sunglasses, which has everything I love: good design, high quality and sustainability.
But just when I thought it couldn't get any better, SKOG presents a special limited edition, designed by one of my favourite Portuguese street artists Vanessa Teodoro, (aka The Super Van).
The artist was invited to pick one of the classic SKOG models and create without limits, so she chose to crave her signature drawings with laser cut. The result is awesome and limited to 50 units. You can order your pair here and start walking around with an art piece on you.

Continuing the Kennedy Center's exploration of international arts, IBERIAN SUITE: global arts remix is a major festival highlighting the many cultures that comprise the Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking peoples—the impact they've had throughout the world, and the vast influences they've embraced from other cultures.The festival, curated by Alicia Adams, Vice President of International Programming and Dance, includes dozens of performances by some of the world's best contemporary music, dance, and theater artists, many who are making their U.S. or D.C. debuts. Visual arts are highlighted in exhibitions and installations around the building, and additional events focus on literature, film, cuisine, and more.
Here's a bit of what you can see from the "Portuguese team":
Installation “The Stone Raft” by the Portuguese, Pritzker Prize winners, architects Souto Moura and Siza Vieira.
The installation “The Stone Raft”, made of Portuguese stone, is based on Jose Saramago’s book with the same title and will be in exhibition at the exterior front of the Kennedy Center.
Installation – Hall of homage to Fernando Pessoa - “A journey of Imagination”
A real size cork tram, which symbolizes the power of the books and literature in transporting us to journeys of our imagination, basically alluding to Lisbon and Fernando Pessoa as well. The tram conveys Fernado Pessoa’s message, used as Arte Institute’s motto since the beginning, “the man has the size of his dream”. With this installation Arte Institute also intends to show the American public a way of employ a traditional Portuguese material, as cork, but giving it a modern and contemporary usage.
In that hall, there will be a cork station with panels from the artist Manuela Pimentel who works the idea of Azulejo (painted, tin-glazed tile work) in a contemporary way. The artist also has an installation where we can listen to Fernando Pessoa’s poems and Portuguese popular sayings.
Installation: So Blue So White--Fashions Centuries in the Making
This installation relates the fascinating tale of how Portuguese trading ships brought Chinese porcelain to Europe, where it became extraordinarily popular and widely imitated, eventually by manufacturers such as Royal Delft. The international passion for blue-and-white porcelain that began in the 16th century continues to this day, influencing leading fashion designers throughout the world. A selection of their exquisite creations, inspired by blue-and-white porcelain and ceramic tiles, comes together in a dazzling display in the Hall of States. Highlights include two whimsical gowns created by Portugal's Storytailors atelier, both commissioned especially for this festival.

This is a love story and a catharsis by artist and designer Sebastian Errazuriz. His way of letting go and simultaneously immortalizing the 12 love ghosts from the past.
But instead of portraying his lovers he decided to transform them in shoes. The exhibition, held at Melissa pop-up store in Miami, ended last January, but you can enjoy it virtually in the blog 12 shoes for 12 lovers. The shoes are marvelous, but the stories around each one of them are also great. I learned that Sebastian was surprised by the police while having sex in his car with GI Jane, a colonel's daughter! And also that "The Virgin Anna" turned into a nun after losing her virginity with him.
In several interviews, Sebastian confessed that most of these women were flattered, and some didn't realize they had such an impact in his life. Well, most of them but probably not "Ice Queen Sophie" or "Gold Digger Alison"...

I recently found a really inspiring project. It's called Maria Riding Company, was officially born in 2012, and it's nothing more than restoring motorcycles. Well, actually it is more. It's a total transformation of a classic motorcycle into something completely new, truly original, but with a vintage twist. In other words, a work of art.But since riding is something you can do off the road, Maria Riding Company also offers the most beautiful surfboards in the world (at least to me). I fact, they are so beautiful that I'm seriously thinking about quitting body boarding and learn how to surf, just to have one of those boards. Then they also make incredibly gorgeous accessories, backpacks and t-shirts. Looking at Maria's pieces makes us dream about a Summer road trip on the East Coast. Or better yet: on the Costa Alentejana.It's worth browsing through their website, so aspirational, and dream about that road trip while thinking about the true meaning of the brand's claim:Extraordinary Rides for Unconventional People.

It's not a secret that my favorite brand is Dior. It's also no secret that one of my favorite contemporary artists is Joana Vasconcelos. But having the opportunity to see these two names together is simply fascinating (at least to me!).
Joana was one of the fifteen women artists invited by Dior to find inspiration for their contemporary creations in Miss Dior, the fragrance. And the result couldn't be more exciting. Congratulations Joana for another outstanding piece of art.

A few years ago a friend of mine started photographing the LEGO Dummy. Just for fun. He loves LEGO and he loves photography so it was a matter of time until he figured out what how to mash both. But then he released the photos and everyone went crazy about them, so crazy that my friend had to gather them in an exhibition.
And here it is (finally!) opening today in Lisbon. For all who can't come to Lisbon this Summer, check his blog and see for yourselves what a great artwork it is (and you can buy the photos too).

Those who don't believe that laughing is the best remedy, don't know this story.Bob Carey began photographing himself in the most unexpected places wearing nothing but a pink tutu. It was just for fun, until the day he found out his wife had breast cancer. Their fight with the disease (which stroke twice in three years) showed that "sometimes the very best thing—no, the only thing—we can do to face another day is to laugh at ourselves, and share a laugh with others".That's when Bob decided to share his photographs and help several breast cancer organizations. The Tutu Project promotes exhibitions, an events and now it also turned into a book. The best part is that you can also buy the pictures.Already on my wish list :)
